Foot pain is a condition so common that 75% of people in the United States suffer from it. You might think that foot pain only affects athletes since they are more active, however, that is not the case.

Common Causes of Foot Pain

Common Foot Conditions That Cause Foot Pain Include:

·Plantar fasciitis. Considered one of the most common causes of foot pain, plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the plantar fascia, a ligament or tissue forming your foot arch.

·Heel spur. A foot ailment wherein your heel develops an extra bony protrusion which is commonly associated with plantar fasciitis.

·Flat feet. If you have fallen arches, weight is mainly being carried by your heel, causing foot and knee pain.

Other Causes And Risk Factors For Foot Pain Are:

·Overuse of feet

·Foot injury

·Direct trauma to the foot

·Muscle and ligament sprains

·Improper alignment of feet

·Ill-fitting shoes

·Being overweight

Risk Factors for Foot Pain

It is said that women have a higher risk for foot pain than men. Additional risk factors include:

·Obesity. Your feet might not be able to support your excess weight, causing foot pain.

·Pregnancy. If you’re pregnant, you have an extra weight in your belly and your feet might have a difficult time supporting your weight.

·Diabetes. When you have diabetes, you’ll have a higher risk of foot complications since this condition affects the amount of blood flow delivered to your feet causing you to experience pain or even numbness.

·Arthritis. If you have rheumatoid arthritis, the joints of your feet might be damaged and inflamed, causing your pain.

How to Manage Foot Pain

Management of your foot pain depends on what causes it. 

Here Are Some Steps To Manage Your Foot Pain:

1.Determine the cause. Once you determine the cause, you can start applying the best course of treatment for your foot pain.

2.Follow the RICE method. If the cause of your foot pain is a result of an injury, it is safe to follow the RICE principle. Rest the affected area and prevent it from further harm. Minimize swelling by applying an ice pack. Wrap an elastic bandage around the injury to immobilize it. Finally, elevate the foot to mitigate swelling.

3.Eliminate the cause. If one of the causes of your foot pain is obesity or prolonged wearing of high heels, start eliminating the cause. If you’re obese, exercise and eat a healthy diet to shed off those excess pounds. Wear flat shoes if the cause of your insole pain is high heels.

4.Take pain reliever medications. If the pain still doesn’t go away, over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen can help lessen the pain.

5.Use shoe inserts or orthotic insoles. You can also manage heel pain with insoles and orthotic aids. These provide additional cushion and support to prevent or alleviate foot pain.

Tips To Prevent Foot Pain

As much as possible, only choose comfortable and well-cushioned shoes. Before you participate in sports or any rigorous activity, warm-up first and wear protective gear for your feet such as foot pads and ankle braces. Aim to maintain a healthy body weight too.

Foot pain can often be managed and treated at home, however, if the cause of your foot pain is due to an injury with severe signs and symptoms such as intense pain and bleeding, contact your doctor right away.
