Stepping on a broken glass is one of the worst feelings.
Even if you only encounter a small shattered piece, the stinging sensation you feel when it punctures your skin is quite a distinct pain no one can ever explain. Learning how to get glass out of foot is an essential knowledge you can incorporate when the unfortunate occasion arises.
So let’s say you’ve accidentally broken a glass in the kitchen, cleaned it up, and a few hours later you’ve found yourself hurting in the heel only to find out you have a tiny shard of glass stuck down there. Now you can’t wear your shoes to work because every step means a painful dilemma. That said, here are some DIY ways on how to get rid of glass away from your foot.
Your tweezer can be your saving grace. If you have one, it could be the fastest way to pull out the glass especially if the glass is not fully buried in your skin.
This one’s an effective remedy where a lot of people have already benefited. You simply have to make a paste with a baking soda.
1.Combine 1-tablespoon baking soda with enough water that makes it a kinda thick paste.
2.Apply the paste into the affected area.
3.Place a band-aid or a bandage in the same area.
4.Let it sit overnight.
5.The next day, you’ll be impressed by how the glass sticks out of the skin while you slowly remove the band-aid.
Needle + tweezer + baking soda
Now this one’s the ultimate combination. This particular method is ideal in cases where the glass has made its way underneath the skin. If you happen to have a tiny piece of glass in your skin and you can’t even see it but you know it’s there (because it basically hurts), then try this solution.
1.Make a baking soda paste as stated in the above step (baking soda + water)
2.Apply a bandage or band-aid in the affected area
3.Let it sit for about an hour
4.Gently touch the affected area or have someone else determine the ‘exact’ location of glass below the skin
5.Now use a needle pierce through that spot, just enough to expose the glass
6.The glass fragment must pop right out
7.Use your tweezers to finally pull out the glass
This one is believed to promote a quicker removal. Vinegar can also be a good substitute for baking soda if the latter is not available at the moment. As an antiseptic 5% acetic acid solution, white vinegar makes a powerful weapon in pushing out a glass from your foot – even if it's invisible!
1.Soak your feet – or the affected area – in vinegar for about half an hour
2.It should be enough time to make the glass rise to the skin
3.If not, there are some cases where it took an hour before the glass can be seen at the surface.
4.Use your tweezers to finally pull it out
One of the basic rules of science is the popular proven idea that “heat expands and cold contracts.” It is simply a fact that heat can expand materials and even body organs like the skin. That said, you can use warm water as an effective technique in enlarging the hole created by the glass, making it more accessible.
1.Simply put warm water (as hot as you can but not too much) in a basin or a foot tub
2.Soak the affected feet for about 20 minutes or until your skin becomes wrinkly
3.After a certain period, the heat will soon expose the glass.
4.Start tweezing the glass to remove it
Honey is a natural disinfectant. And because of its sticky nature, you can also give this one a try.
1.Simply apply honey into the affected area
2.Apply a band-aid on top of the honey layer
3.Let it sit for around half an hour
4.Start trying to remove the band-aid and see if the glass came out with the honey
Note: This method is not reported to be always effective. But one thing’s for sure, honey is a natural way to keep your wound clean which makes it still useful in the process.
Yes. That glue right in your drawer which your little kid uses in art class. White glue – the typical one used in schools – has the ability to dry quickly. The beauty of white glue is its ability to pull up whatever is stuck underneath. Think of a facial mask for instance. It has properties similar to glue which makes it an effective way to pull out blackheads or whiteheads. That said, you can try using glue in an attempt to get the glass out.
1.Swab on some white glue in the affected area
2.You can use a cotton bud in spreading the glue without you having the need to touch it
3.Let the glue dry completely
4.The right way to peel a glue is to start at the edges first and work your way inwards. Do NOT peel the glue by pinching it right at the center
5.If all goes well, the glass should stick with the glue and will come out with it when you’re peeling.
6.If the glue is not able to fully remove the glass, you can repeat the process again and at least make the glass move closer and closer to the surface
When a glass is punctured into your skin, it can also be considered as a splinter. If you happen to get punctured by any other material apart from glass, then you can also check our article on how to get a splinter out of your foot.
The important thing is, the next time you shatter a glass of wine in the kitchen, you wouldn’t be worrying about shards that much as you already know how to get glass out of foot!
